How to play Connections
Connections is one of the most popular (and challenging) daily puzzle games published by the New York Times (owners of Wordle). The aim of Connections is to group the 16 words of the day into four groups, where each group of four words has a common theme.
For instance, the words “Hook”, “Nana”, “Peter”, and “Wendy” are all Peter Pan characters. Or to take another example, “Action”, “Ballpark”, “Go”, and “Stick” are all words which commonly come just before the word “Figure”.
Your job is to figure out what these themes are that connect the various words together – but be wary, because a lot of the time there are deceptive red herring connections placed purely to throw you off! To win the game, you have to find all four Connections without making 4 mistakes. On your fourth mistake, the game is over and the answer is revealed automatically.
Each of the four groups in each day’s Connections puzzle is also assigned a different colour, which represents how easy or difficult the Connection is to find. These colours are: Yellow (Easiest), Green (Easy), Blue (Medium), and Purple (Hardest).

What is today’s Connections answer?
Here is the answer to today’s Connections puzzle on Monday, 13th October:
- Yellow: Metaphors for Potentially Volatile Situations (Can of Worms, Hornet’s Nest, Minefield, Pandora’s Box)
- Green: Bar Events (Happy Hour, Karaoke, Live Music, Trivia Night)
- Blue: Words After a Welcome Departure (About Time, Finally, Good Riddance, Sayonara)
- Purple: Ending With Synonyms for “Swindle” (American Hustle, Comic Con, Golden Fleece, Lucky Stiff)
I’ve got to admit, I got distracted by some of the obvious “traps” today, like Pandora’s box and the golden fleece, or Comic Con as an incorrect part of the “events” group.
Another tricky part of today’s puzzle is the danger of misinterpreting the yellow theme as insect-related – which would include all yellow words except “minefield”. I also had some doubts about blue before handing it in, because of “sayonara”. It’s definitely used sarcastically among English-speakers, but of course, it’s not sarcastic at all in origin.
Once I got down to the final words, and excluded “Comic Con” from the green theme, I finally noticed the “con” and “hustle” similarity, leading to the complete purple theme.Do you play online quizzes and puzzles?
