Need a hint for today’s Connections on Friday, 25th July? The NYT Connections puzzle isn’t exactly the easiest word puzzle out there, but it’s among the most entertaining ones. Given the high difficulty level, it’s also one of the most challenging and most rewarding puzzles – if you find the solution.

How to play Connections
Connections is one of the most popular (and challenging) daily puzzle games published by the New York Times (owners of Wordle). The aim of Connections is to group the 16 words of the day into four groups, where each group of four words has a common theme.
For instance, the words “Hook”, “Nana”, “Peter”, and “Wendy” are all Peter Pan characters. Or to take another example, “Action”, “Ballpark”, “Go”, and “Stick” are all words which commonly come just before the word “Figure”.
Your job is to figure out what these themes are that connect the various words together – but be wary, because a lot of the time there are deceptive red herring connections placed purely to throw you off! To win the game, you have to find all four Connections without making 4 mistakes. On your fourth mistake, the game is over and the answer is revealed automatically.
Each of the four groups in each day’s Connections puzzle is also assigned a different colour, which represents how easy or difficult the Connection is to find. These colours are: Yellow (Easiest), Green (Easy), Blue (Medium), and Purple (Hardest).

Connections hint for Friday 25th July
Here are your Connections hints for today:
- Yellow: Don’t talk about it!
- Green: This is a very short theme.
- Blue: As heard in baseball.
- Purple: Perhaps you can add something to turn these words royal.
- Extra hint 1: The blue group is the only group to lack a word starting with ‘M’.
- Extra hint 2: ‘In’ and ‘out’ are in different groups.

What is today’s Connections answer?
Here is the answer to today’s Connections puzzle on Friday, 25th July:
- Yellow: Hush-Hush (Mum, Private, Quiet, Secret)
- Green: State Abbreviations (In, Ma, Oh, Ok)
- Blue: Baseball Calls (Ball, Fair, Foul, Out)
- Purple: Queen ___ (Bed, Bee, Mary, Mother)
Forget state abbreviations, I solved the green theme by placing every two-letter word together. Why choose the hard road if there’s an easy one? Jokes aside, I only decided to try this after I was left with a half-solved ‘something to do with sports’ theme (the baseball one) and the states. Would’ve been risky otherwise!
I’ve often mentioned how difficult the purple ‘add a word’ themes are to me, but today’s edition was manageable. ‘Mary’ stood out as the only name, ruling out a ‘famous people’ group and prompting me to search for an extra word to make it match the others. And so I found the ‘Queen’ part.
I also often mention that synonyms are relatively easy, which is why the yellow theme caused no issues today. Too bad the trivia stumbling block was still there, but in the end I didn’t need to find the baseball terms to solve this Connections puzzle.
