How to play Connections
Connections is one of the most popular (and challenging) daily puzzle games published by the New York Times (owners of Wordle). The aim of Connections is to group the 16 words of the day into four groups, where each group of four words has a common theme.
For instance, the words “Hook”, “Nana”, “Peter”, and “Wendy” are all Peter Pan characters. Or to take another example, “Action”, “Ballpark”, “Go”, and “Stick” are all words which commonly come just before the word “Figure”.
Your job is to figure out what these themes are that connect the various words together – but be wary, because a lot of the time there are deceptive red herring connections placed purely to throw you off! To win the game, you have to find all four Connections without making 4 mistakes. On your fourth mistake, the game is over and the answer is revealed automatically.
Each of the four groups in each day’s Connections puzzle is also assigned a different colour, which represents how easy or difficult the Connection is to find. These colours are: Yellow (Easiest), Green (Easy), Blue (Medium), and Purple (Hardest).

What is today’s Connections answer?
Here is the answer to today’s Connections puzzle on Friday, 30th May:
- Yellow: Rods (Bat, Club, Staff, Stick)
- Green: Common Swag Items (Hat, Tee, Tote, Water Bottle)
- Blue: They’Re On A Roll! (Foil, Tape, Ribbon, Toilet Paper)
- Purple: Words Before “Shack” (Caddy, Love, Radio, Shake)
The purple group is a tough one today. I didn’t manage to complete it, but I applaud you if you did. Luckily, the yellow theme was far easier once I started looking for items of a similar shape – I just needed a minute to interpret the words correctly (including every yellow word except ‘stick’).
Next, I started looking for clothes (thanks to ‘hat’ and ‘tee’), then basic necessity items (mostly because of ‘toilet paper’, but also ‘water bottle’), and finally ‘rolls’. Although I didn’t quite feel like I was on a roll, I finally got the blue group.
I’m not sure if I would’ve found the swag items had I not been down to eight words. I definitely felt like there was a ‘common items people carry with them’ value to them, but this connection didn’t seem particularly strong to me. Still, it was the only one I found, so I went ahead and matched the green theme.
