How to play Connections

Connections is one of the most popular (and challenging) daily puzzle games published by the New York Times (owners of Wordle). The aim of Connections is to group the 16 words of the day into four groups, where each group of four words has a common theme.

For instance, the words “Hook”, “Nana”, “Peter”, and “Wendy” are all Peter Pan characters. Or to take another example, “Action”, “Ballpark”, “Go”, and “Stick” are all words which commonly come just before the word “Figure”.

Your job is to figure out what these themes are that connect the various words together – but be wary, because a lot of the time there are deceptive red herring connections placed purely to throw you off! To win the game, you have to find all four Connections without making 4 mistakes. On your fourth mistake, the game is over and the answer is revealed automatically.

Each of the four groups in each day’s Connections puzzle is also assigned a different colour, which represents how easy or difficult the Connection is to find. These colours are: Yellow (Easiest), Green (Easy), Blue (Medium), and Purple (Hardest).

What is today’s Connections answer?

Here is the answer to today’s Connections puzzle on Thursday, 27th March:

  • Yellow: Affect (Move, Reach, Sway, Touch)
  • Green: You Got It! (Bingo, Correct, Ding, Right)
  • Blue: Slang For Money (Change, Green, Paper, Scratch)
  • Purple: Objects With The Prefix “Micro-” (Chip, Phone, Scope, Wave)

Upon first glance, ‘bingo’ and ‘correct’ stood out to me. It took me a while to find ‘ding’ as a member to that group though (‘right’ was obvious), as I was looking for something with a more literal meaning. Only when I realised that it was more about exclamations and not so much synonyms of ‘correct’, did I broaden my view enough to add ‘ding’.

The yellow theme was a bit harder than usual for me as I had to take an extra step to find it rather than simply group four words with the exact same meaning. I initially thought of each word’s ‘main’ meaning, as in ‘touching an object’ and ‘moving in a direction’. I did eventually think of being moved or touched emotionally, and then expanded this to being affected, so ‘reach’ and ‘sway’ would fit the bill.

The next group I got was purple, not blue, because my brain just went to ‘micro’ when it saw ‘wave’. I tested it out on the others and it worked – which is a good thing, because I’m not sure if I would’ve caught on to the money thing. I never use ‘scratch’ to describe money myself, but it’s always nice to learn new terms.
