How to play Connections
Connections is one of the most popular (and challenging) daily puzzle games published by the New York Times (owners of Wordle). The aim of Connections is to group the 16 words of the day into four groups, where each group of four words has a common theme.
For instance, the words “Hook”, “Nana”, “Peter”, and “Wendy” are all Peter Pan characters. Or to take another example, “Action”, “Ballpark”, “Go”, and “Stick” are all words which commonly come just before the word “Figure”.
Your job is to figure out what these themes are that connect the various words together – but be wary, because a lot of the time there are deceptive red herring connections placed purely to throw you off! To win the game, you have to find all four Connections without making 4 mistakes. On your fourth mistake, the game is over and the answer is revealed automatically.
Each of the four groups in each day’s Connections puzzle is also assigned a different colour, which represents how easy or difficult the Connection is to find. These colours are: Yellow (Easiest), Green (Easy), Blue (Medium), and Purple (Hardest).

When I first saw today’s Connections, I was flabbergasted. Doubly so, as it was my duty to write this guide and I had no idea what I was looking at. Then I remembered that it was April 1. After checking last year’s emoji-filled puzzle and realising that this was nothing new, I actually got the Currency Symbols group easily. The rest were more challenging – while “&” and “+” obviously belonged together, “N” and “X” confused me, and I kept wanting to place them together with “O,” “P,” and “R” to form a collection of letters. It was only after I started thinking of multiplication and other associated maths symbols that I made the connection.
I went on to solve the Blue group of emoticon mouths next. Once I figured out that “(” and “)” were frown and smiley faces, I recalled my days of posting on forums, when I had to sign off with “:P” because emojis weren’t invented yet. (I was always suspicious of folks who added a nose in there – something about “:-P” just looks sinister to me.) And then I grouped the Purple words together by default and called it a day. Nice job making me flex my mind on April Fools, Connections.
